Best E-Bike Holiday Routes in Central Europe
If you’re wondering where to go on your next or even your first e-bike holiday, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most searched questions right now.
People want two things.
- Beautiful scenery.
- And realistic routes.
Here are four routes that deliver both.

🇦🇹 Donau/Danube – Bike Path
This is a confidence builder. Flat, well signposted and wonderfully predictable. Just get on your e-bike and ride!
The stretch between Passau and Vienna is the classic. My favourite section is through the Wachau Valley, where you ride past vineyards, apricot orchards and pretty towns like Dürnstein.
Daily distance sweet spot is 40 to 70 km. You’ll never be far from coffee and cake. Or a ferry crossing, which means you can experience both sides of the river.
Best for beginners, families and couples with mixed fitness levels or anyone who wants a relaxing first tour.

🇦🇹 Salzkammergut-Bike Path
If you want a city, as well as lakes and mountains all in one route, then this is the right pick for you.
Setting off from the beautiful city of Salzburg, you’ll pass alongside several lakes, including the famous Wolfgangsee, pass through the spa town Bad Ischl and ride quiet paths through villages that feel properly Austrian.
There are gentle rolling stretches, but with an e-bike, they feel perfectly manageable.
Plan 40 to 65 km per day. Factor in swimming stops.

🇩🇪 Altmühltal – Bike Path
This is Bavaria at its gentlest. Pretty, scenic and well signposted.
You follow the Altmühl river past limestone cliffs and sleepy villages. Surfaces are excellent, and gradients are kind. Stop for some Bavarian beer or some excellent hearty food to fuel you for the afternoon.
40 to 60 km per day feels easy here.
It’s ideal if you want the German countryside without Alpine climbing.

🇮🇹 Etsch Bike Path
Follow the Adige River between Merano and Bolzano, and you’ll cycle through vineyards and apple orchards with dramatic mountain backdrops. South Tyrol at its finest.
It’s often gently downhill if you ride north to south, which makes it feel delightfully easy.
50 to 80 km per day is comfortable, especially with wine tasting as motivation.

Quick Practical Guidance
Route difficulty
Riverside routes like the Donau (Danube) and Altmühltal are easiest. Lake and Alpine valley routes have more variety but remain very manageable on an e-bike.
Daily distances
40 to 70 km per day works beautifully for most riders over 40. It leaves time for sightseeing, photos and long lunches. No stress, no fuss, just enjoy the journey and the amazing scenery.
Hiring e-bikes
Start in cities such as Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and Bolzano, all of which have reliable multi-day rental providers. Many include panniers and route details.
Luggage transfers
If you prefer riding light, book luggage transfers. It keeps the holiday relaxed and removes any additional weight on your e-bike.
Best months
May, June and September are ideal – Warm weather, quieter routes and better hotel availability.
My Honest Take
- If you are looking for a flat and foolproof route? Choose the Donau/Danube.
- Should you want classic Austrian lake scenery, head to Salzkammergut.
- Or if you want something different but gentle, then try Bavaria and pick Altmühltal.
- If you want vineyards and sunshine, Alto Adige is hard to beat.
All four offer excellent infrastructure, reliable surfaces and enough café stops to keep morale high.
