Our Ebike Tour on the Romantic Road in Germany
Last Autumn, we decided on the Romantic Road in Germany as we are not that familiar with this area. A friend who had holidayed in this area in her mobile home recommended it to me, so off we went. The Romantic Road is famous for its beautiful scenery and charming towns, stretching about 500 kilometres from Wurzburg to Füssen. Here’s a snapshot of our journey through the heart of Bavaria.

Starting Off in Wurzburg
Our trip began in Wurzburg, a lovely city known for its wine; I know, when you think of Germany, you think of beer. However, you are in the middle of Fränkische Weinland (the Franconian Wine area) with white and red wine on offer in those Bocksbeutel bottles (round bulbous bottles). You probably had one with a candle stuck in it years ago.
The old buildings and friendly people made us feel welcome right away. We spent our first day exploring the city, trying delicious Weisswurst (white sausage) and a glass of local wine and getting ready for the road ahead.
Village Hopping
Our route took us through several small towns, each with its own unique charm. First was Wertheim, a cute town by the river, where we enjoyed a “Federweißer”, their first wine of the season (dangerously tasty) and relaxed by the water. As we pedalled on, we passed through vineyards and open fields, feeling a bit like we had travelled back in time.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber was next, and it was like stepping into a fairy tale. This town is known for its well-preserved medieval buildings and city walls. We expected knights jousting in the streets and city criers ringing bells and telling us today’s news. OK, so it didn’t happen, but the town certainly makes you think it could.
In Dinkelsbühl, we admired the old fortifications and colourful houses. We stopped for some traditional Bavarian food, and even though it’s not always the best for cycling, their food is delicious. We tend to share to have a taste but not feel like we need a snooze afterwards. Onward to Nördlingen was also interesting; it didn’t capture our hearts quite like the others. But that’s okay—not every stop has to be a favourite!
Augsburg and the Final Stretch
By the time we reached Augsburg, we were ready for a bit of city life again. Augsburg is bigger than the other towns we’ve visited, with a mix of old buildings and new shops. It was a nice change of pace.
Finally, we made our way to Füssen, the last stop on the Romantic Road. The closer we got, the more impressive the scenery became, with the Alps rising up in the distance.
Ending in Füssen
Füssen was breathtaking. The town sits near two famous castles, including Neuschwanstein, which looks like it’s straight out of a storybook. Think Disney Castle and you will be correct, it is very picturesque and will bring your childhood imagination. It was the perfect end to our trip.
Looking Back
Reflecting on our journey, we were amazed by the beauty of Bavaria in Germany. From quaint towns to gorgeous landscapes, with vineyards and wide open farming land, there was always something new to see.
Riding the Romantic Road was a fantastic experience, filled with adventure, culture, and lots of memorable moments. It’s something we’d recommend to anyone looking for a unique way to see Germany.
So, if you’re thinking about an ebike adventure this summer, consider the Romantic Road. It’s not just a route—it’s a journey through history, nature, and some of the prettiest towns you’ll ever see. Happy cycling!
