E-Biking in Italy: Beauty, Culture and Relaxed Adventure
Italy is a dream for e-bike travel, with stunning scenery, quiet backroads, good food around every corner, and a real sense of “la dolce vita” on two wheels. The country’s varied regions mean you can find a route to suit every mood, from lakes and coastlines to hills and historic towns.
The northern lakes are a great starting point. Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Idro offer beautiful waterside paths and easy access to nearby hills, with plenty of villages and gelato stops along the way. These routes are ideal for relaxed touring, offering big views and short climbs that are made easy with electric assist.
On the coast, the area around Caorle is flat, quiet, and full of surprises. Think canals, countryside lanes, and colourful fishing towns just a short pedal from the beach.

Long Distance Route?
In comparison, the Alpe-Adria trail from Tarvisio to Grado stands out as one of the most scenic long-distance routes in Europe. You start in the Alps and glide down through valleys and farmland to the Adriatic Sea, almost all on a well-maintained, signposted cycle route.
Additionally, there’s Tuscany with it’s rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, vineyards, and timeless villages. While the terrain is more demanding, e-bikes make it manageable for most riders, and the rewards are worth the effort. Peaceful routes, incredible views, and hearty local food waiting at every stop.
Cycling infrastructure is growing in Italy, many regions offer excellent bike paths and signage, others rely more on quiet local roads. My advice is to use GPS and a good map for a ‘belt and braces’ approach. Plan to slow down and take it all in.
You can find my completed routes on the website, complete with real-world tips and highlights. If you’re looking for a mix of beauty, culture, and relaxed adventure, Italy ticks all the boxes. I would suggest visiting Italy for cycling in Spring or Autumn. The height of summer is very hot, and there are a lot of people, which is not conducive to riding a bike on what should be quiet roads.
