How to Plan Your First E-Bike Trip in Europe (Without Overthinking It)
If you’re thinking about planning your first ebike trip and want a bit of help keeping it simple, that’s exactly what I do here at Ebike Europe.
Planning your first ebike trip doesn’t need to be complicated. You don’t need spreadsheets, military precision, or nerves of steel.
What you do need is a simple route, somewhere comfortable to stay, and enough time to actually enjoy it.
Because that’s the whole point.
If you’re overthinking it already, you’re not alone. Most people do. The questions start quickly… where should I go, how far can I ride, what if I get it wrong?
Here’s the honest answer.
You probably will get something slightly wrong. And it won’t matter.

Start With the Route (Keep It Simple)
For your first trip, this is not the time to prove anything.
Pick a route that is:
- Mostly flat or gently rolling
- Well signposted
- Popular with other cyclists
River routes are ideal. They take away a lot of the stress because you’re not constantly checking maps or worrying about terrain.
Austria, Germany and parts of northern Italy are brilliant for this.

Don’t Overestimate Your Daily Distance
This is where most people go wrong.
Yes, ebikes make things easier… but this is still a holiday, not a race.
A realistic daily distance for most people is:
- 40 to 70 kilometres
That gives you time for:
- Coffee stops
- Lunch without rushing
- A wander around where you’re staying
If you plan 80 to 100 km days, you’ll spend more time watching the clock than enjoying the ride.

Book Comfortable, Convenient Accommodation
You don’t need luxury… but you do need comfort.
After a day on the bike, what matters is:
- A good shower
- Comfortable bed
- Hearty breakfast
- Somewhere safe to store your ebike
- A decent meal nearby
Point-to-point routes with pre-booked accommodation make life much easier, especially for your first trip. If you can arrange luggage transfer, even better. It turns the whole experience into something relaxed rather than logistical. There are companies that offer this service.

Keep Your Packing Light (You Really Don’t Need Much)
This is another area where overthinking kicks in.
You don’t need to pack for every possible scenario.
Stick to:
- Comfortable cycling clothes
- A light waterproof
- Casual clothes for the evening
- Basic toiletries
If you forget something, you can buy it. You’re not in the middle of nowhere.

Accept That Not Everything Will Go Perfectly
This is the bit no one tells you… and it’s the most important.
You might:
- Take a wrong turn
- Arrive later than planned
- Have a slightly questionable hotel choice
And somehow, those are often the moments you remember most.
My first proper ebike tour certainly wasn’t perfect. But it worked. And more importantly, it gave me the confidence to do it again… and again.

Keep It Simple, and You’ll Enjoy It More
Your first ebike trip isn’t about ticking off kilometres or proving fitness levels.
It’s about:
- Being outdoors
- Seeing somewhere new
- Enjoying the ride without pressure
So if you take one thing from this, let it be this…
You don’t need the perfect plan. You just need a plan that gets you started.
Please remember: If you’re thinking about planning your first ebike trip and want a bit of help keeping it simple, that’s exactly what I do here at Ebike Europe.
