Centre Based Cycling Holidays: Stay in One Place and Explore More by E-Bike

If you’re looking for a more relaxed way to explore Europe by e-bike, centre based cycling holidays could be exactly what you’re looking for. Also known as a “spoke and hub tour” or “stay and tour cycling holiday”. It simply means choosing one hotel, apartment or guesthouse as your base and exploring a different route each day and returning to the same accommodation.

Instead of packing your luggage every morning and moving from hotel to hotel, you unpack once and make yourself at home. As a result, you’ll have more time to enjoy the destination. Discovering hidden gems and adapt your rides to the weather. Whether you’re cycling through Austria, Germany, Italy, Slovenia or elsewhere in Europe, it’s a style of holiday that offers flexibility, comfort and the freedom to explore at your own pace.

After many years of cycling holidays across Europe, this has become one of my favourite ways to travel. In fact, with the increasingly hot summers we’ve experienced recently, I’ve found it to be one of the safest and most enjoyable ways to continue exploring by e-bike.

What is a Centre Based Cycling Holiday?

A centre based cycling holiday is exactly as it sounds. You choose one accommodation as your base for several days and return there after each ride.

Unlike a traditional point to point tour, where you’re committed to reaching your next hotel every day. A spoke and hub holiday gives you complete flexibility. You decide how far to ride, when to return and even whether to ride at all.

That freedom can completely change the pace of your holiday. Instead of focusing on getting from A to B, you can concentrate on enjoying the scenery, discovering local cafés, visiting attractions and really getting to know the region.

Perfect for Summer Heatwaves

One of the biggest advantages of a centre based cycling holiday is being able to plan your day around the weather rather than your accommodation.

This summer has reminded many cyclists that high temperatures can quickly turn an enjoyable ride into a tiring one. Therefore, I now prefer to leave shortly after breakfast while the temperatures are still comfortable. After several enjoyable hours on the bike, with plenty of time for coffee and lunch. I aim to be back at my accommodation by the early afternoon before the hottest part of the day.

If possible, choose a hotel or apartment with air conditioning and a swimming pool. It might cost a little more, but after riding through temperatures above 30°C, there’s nothing better than cooling off with a swim.

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke aren’t just risks for older cyclists. Anyone spending long periods outdoors during a heatwave can be affected. Consequently, planning your rides around the coolest part of the day is simply sensible cycling.

Ideal for Mountain Weather

Many of Europe’s best cycling destinations are found in mountainous regions, including Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Switzerland and northern Italy.

Living in Austria has taught me how quickly mountain weather can change. The temperature often builds steadily throughout the day, peaking during the afternoon. Before dramatic thunderstorms arrive with heavy rain, hail, strong winds and spectacular lightning.

By finishing your ride in the early afternoon, you’re much more likely to be safely back at your accommodation enjoying a coffee or relaxing by the pool while the storm passes overhead.

Get to know a Destination Properly

One of the greatest pleasures of a spoke and hub holiday is that you really begin to understand the area you’re visiting.

Perhaps you discover a vineyard producing exceptional local wines. A lakeside café serving homemade cakes or a beautiful village where you wish you’d had more time. Because you’re staying nearby, you can simply return another day.

Rather than rushing through a destination, you experience it at a much slower pace. That’s one of the reasons I love cycling in Europe. Every region has its own landscapes, traditions, history and local food waiting to be discovered.

Explore More Than Just the Cycle Routes

A cycling holiday doesn’t have to be all about cycling.

One of the unexpected benefits of staying in one place is having the freedom to enjoy everything else a destination has to offer.

If the weather isn’t ideal or your legs are asking for a rest day, you can visit a local market. Or instead, wander around a historic town, take a mountain lift for panoramic views, enjoy a boat trip on a lake, visit a museum or spend a relaxing afternoon beside the pool.

Those quieter days often become some of the highlights of the holiday and leave you feeling refreshed for the next ride.

How We Plan Our Own Centre Based Cycling Holidays

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to organise everything yourself. When in reality you can either book through a tour operator. (I work with a couple who offer excellent centre based cycling holidays). Or plan it independently if you prefer more flexibility and enjoy putting your own itinerary together.

We begin by choosing an area that offers plenty of cycling opportunities. Wine regions, river valleys, lake districts and gentle mountain areas are often ideal because they provide a variety of routes within easy reach of your accommodation.

Once we’ve found somewhere comfortable to stay, preferably with secure bike storage, and if travelling in summer, air conditioning and a swimming pool. We keep the route planning simple.

Rather than trying to design complicated circular routes straight away, we usually create four rides heading north, south, east and west from our base. Those four routes give us an excellent overview of the surrounding area and often introduce us to places we’d like to visit again later in the week.

Before we arrive, we always call into the local tourist office. They usually have excellent cycling maps, suggested routes and information about local events. They will have seasonal attractions and any temporary closures that may affect your plans.

We also research interesting places we’d like to include along the way. Castles, lakes, vineyards, mountain viewpoints, traditional villages, cafés and local attractions all become natural destinations rather than simply cycling from one point to another.

While apps such as Komoot are brilliant for refining your routes, don’t underestimate local knowledge. Some of our favourite discoveries have come from recommendations made by people who know the area best.

Flexibility Makes All the Difference

Perhaps the greatest benefit of a centre based cycling holiday is the flexibility it offers.

If the weather is poor, you can simply postpone your ride until tomorrow.

If you’re feeling tired after several days in the saddle. Take a rest day without worrying about reaching your next hotel.

If you discover somewhere you’d like to explore further, you have the freedom to return.

Instead of following a fixed itinerary, your holiday adapts to you.

A Great Example from South Styria

Recently, I spent four days exploring South Styria using exactly this style of holiday, and it reminded me why I enjoy spoke and hub touring so much.

Each day took us through vineyards, rolling countryside, charming villages and fantastic local food. Yet every afternoon we returned to the same comfortable base. It struck the perfect balance between cycling, sightseeing and relaxation, especially during the summer heat.

If you’re considering a centre based cycling holiday yourself. Keep an eye out for my South Styria Route Review, where I’ll share the routes we rode, where we stayed and why I think it’s one of Austria’s best destinations for this style of e-bike holiday.

Lindsey’s Final Thoughts

Over the past few years, many of my favourite cycling holidays in Europe have been centre based tours. They allow me to ride when the weather is at its best, avoid the hottest part of the day, adapt to changing mountain conditions and really get to know a destination instead of simply passing through it.

Whether you’re planning a summer escape, a spring cycling break or an autumn tour through Europe’s vineyards and river valleys. This style of holiday works beautifully in every season. In cooler months, you have the same flexibility to wait for the weather to improve before setting out, rather than feeling obliged to ride through persistent rain or cold simply because your next hotel is booked.

If you’re planning your next e-bike holiday in Europe, don’t overlook a centre based cycling holiday. Staying in one place doesn’t mean seeing less. More often than not, it means you’ll discover far more.
