Petes Alpine Adventures – St Ulrich to Stams

Petes Alpine Adventures start in September. My husband, Pete, started his annual Alpine Adventure trip over the Alps. Unsupported and carrying all his gear, including a tent, cooking stove and tools in case of a mechanical with him.

Pete doesn’t have a motor to help him, but all the routes he does can be done on an ebike, and therefore I believe this will be interesting for everyone.

So this is his story in his own words.

Locked and loaded

Load on; final preparations are pretty much done. At this point, there is always a little bit of trepidation, ensuring that you’ve got all you need. Wondering if the bike will stand up to it and, more to the point, if you will stand up to it. Starting today by heading west, the weather looks good, and I’m feeling excited for the coming days. Here’s to my little adventure!

Day 1 completed

So day 1 completed, St Ulrich to Stams (Tirol), the numbers first

  • 151 km,
  • average spd 22.4 km/h
  • 586m up & 757m down.

A beautiful day today in Tirol. Not too hot, but I feel like I’ve had some sun on my face, a proper September day if you can get one. The first day was pretty flat, which was fine as the bike is new and fairly loaded. I reckon, including the bike and load, it will be around 35 kg, and I’m just getting back into the swing of it. After riding a sub 7 kg road bike all summer, it takes some getting used to. It takes some time to get up to speed, more like a tank, but all good.

The Route

Today’s route followed the Wilder Kaiser bike route and then down onto the Inn Valley, where there is a bike path all the way to Stams. Through Wörgl, Rattenberg, Schwaz and into Innbruck. After the city, the bike path picks up again to Telfs and Stams.

Home for the night

Home for the night is on a campsite in Stams. The weather is dry and cool, with chilli and beer for dinner. So after pitching the tent, I could sit outside with a great view and enjoy my food.

Plan for Day 2

Tomorrow l head out of Austria over the Reschen Pass and into Italy (Sud-Tirol), and from there on, the action starts. I hope the weather holds, as rain in the mountains is not much fun when under canvas at night and on the bike during the day.
