Outline of Pillerseetal Tour
This Pillerseetal has a lot of ebike routes to offer, this one I have chosen ensures you see the area from both mountain and valley. It has a bit of a kicker in the middle, so if you are not used to ebikes or would prefer an easier route then leave the middle part out.
Start off strong
Starting in St Jakob, take the ebike path to Hochfilzen past the Weisensee. This small lake or pond, is a pretty place to make a stop. There is a Kneippe here, which is like a walking area in running stream water. There is no translation for a Kneippe, but the definition is – a holistic system for overall health. The water is incredibly cold, I have tried it a couple of times but it’s not for me, however, others swear by it. Your choice, just be careful if you have a heart condition. There is also a climbing wall here where people come to hone their skills, on a hot day it’s nice to take a break and watch them for a while.
Hochfilzen Biathlon Centre
In Hochfilzen, you can make a small detour up to the biathlon centre which is a mecca for Nordic Ski athletes. These guys are incredibly fit and strong and you can see some of them in action during the summer months training for the winter season. If you are very lucky you might see our local Biathlon hero, Dominik Landertinger training here as well.
Back to the ebike path and head towards Fieberbrunn. The track passes through farmland and due to its height it, gives fantastic views of the ski area in Fieberbrunn as well the Kitzbühlerhorn and Wilden Kaiser in the distance. There is a refreshing bit of downhill to the village of Fieberbrunn where you might want to grab a drink, snack or fill up your water bottles before you head on up the steep part. I would recommend the Hotel Alte Post, right in the centre for a lunch or snack stop.
As mentioned – if you are looking for an easier day then leave this next part out and continue on towards St Jakob on the ebike route.
Heading up the mountain
There are 2 different tracks up the mountain, both are fairly steep in places, this can mean up to 20% gradient. If you are new to ebiking or are not that strong you may find this part difficult. I did this track with another couple who were new to the area, they were physically fit and quite strong and they found it quite hard. So be aware of this before you start the climb up. One of the tracks is through the trees and therefore will provide a bit of shade on a hot day and the other takes you under the gondola lift. This route is a bit more open, therefore a hot day could be exhausting.
Top tip on this part is to use the power levels on your ebike. There is no shame in kicking up to “sport or turbo” that is what it is there for. Keep an eye on your heart rate and stop when you need to. Make sure to keep drinking water.
Once you get to the middle station of the lift, there is a man-made pond where you can take a break in the sun. There is a restaurant at the middle station of the gondola. Or there is one about 500m further on called the Gasthof Wildalpgatterl, which I would recommend for good food, service and views. If you are making a day of it there is also Timoks Coster which is like a toboggan fixed on a metal slide and is great fun.
What goes up….
Heading back down to the valley on the far side of the mountain, provides another set of stunning views, just take care at the top as it is steep and there are loose chippings so can be slippy. Remember to stop and get your photos as it’s too good to not have memories. The route brings you down past the Lauchsee which is a local bathing area, this can be your afternoon stop and swim. Also for any ski fans, this is the home of local hero Manuel Feller who apparently likes to spend a bit of time at the Lauchsee when he is not training.
Once back in Fieberbrunn you are heading towards St Jakob up through the forest, it is quite a pull back up this side, so make sure you have enough battery and use the power to get you there. This route will again give you some beautiful scenery and a bit of shade on a hot day.
