Dürnstein, Wachau
The Danube bike path between Passau & Vienna is very popular with cyclists in summer, and one of my favourite areas on the route is Dürnstein in the Wachau. This beautiful wine area is also famous for its apricots, and all sorts of products are made from them. I tried to sample a few of them, such as marmalade, cake, strüdel, dumplings, or just fresh off the tree.
Dürnstein in the Wachau is a fairytale village with cobbled streets that harks back to its medieval roots. You can’t miss Dürnstein from the river: it’s the one with the blue church tower! A heart-pumping hike to Dürnstein Castle gives you a great view over the valley along the Danube, which, by the way, is not blue! I’m not sure where the Blue Danube came from, but I don’t think the mucky grey-brown Danube has quite the same ring to it.
