The Smile Tour of Austria – After the lockdown in 2020, I undertook a tour across Austria on my ebike. When I planned my route, it looked like a big smile, hence the Smile Tour of Austria. I wanted to do a tour on my own across a country that is my home and that I love. I was keen to cycle on several bike paths to illustrate the scenery we have here. Also, help people understand what to expect from a bike tour, plus for visibility for my website and social media sites. And finally, I wanted to spread positivity about travelling after the lockdown and everything that has gone on since covid spread worldwide.

I have been riding an e-bike for over a decade and have done several tours throughout Austria and many other European countries. However, this is the first time I have completed a tour alone without my husband to help.

I am not an athlete or a fitness fanatic, I’m in my 50s and of the cuddly persuasion, but I also love cycling and exploring the countryside on two wheels. I want to encourage and inspire people to get out and try something new, irrelevant of their shape, size or fitness. If you can ride a bike, you can ride an e-bike – it’s cycling but easier.

Changing views

I have worked with the public for over 30 years and continue to work in tourism in winter. Covid changed a lot of people. I had hoped mainly for the better, but I am still unsure two years on. We have our ‘new normal’ now, but I am unsure what that means. In 2020 I couldn’t wait for a new normal, so I created my own, cycling over 1100 km all over Austria, covering 7 of the 9 provinces and seeing the most beautiful parts of this incredibly diverse country. The Smile Tour of Austria became my new normal.

Whatever you are looking for, trying an e-bike tour will be something you will never regret. You see the world from a different angle and meet people you may never have had the opportunity to meet. It opens up a whole new world to so many people. I will warn you, though, it is highly addictive, and you won’t be able to stop once you start.

Why the Smile Tour of Austria?

When planning my trip, the route looked like a smile; I decided to call it that. A Scot in Austria is just because that is who I am.
