Buying an ebike – What do you need it for

Thinking about buying an ebike? There is no denying that an ebike is expensive, and researching before you make that commitment is essential. Ensuring you have an ebike for your needs is important, so ensure you know what you want from it before spending a lot of money.

What can you afford when buying an ebike?

The cost of some ebikes is the price of a small car, and you wouldn’t just buy one of those on a whim. Making a list of what you would use an ebike for is the starting point. Be realistic with your list.

  • If you are not doing downhill, single-track riding, would you really need a full-suspension bike?
  • Are you going to use it around a town for shopping, perhaps with a trailer for your kids or your dog? Therefore, would a city bike be the best choice?
  • Would you prefer to ride on signposted bike paths, forest roads, and something more challenging on hills? Then, would a mid-drive hardtail be the best choice for you?

Do your research

Whatever you decide, take your time. Don’t go for a bike because you like the colour (which would probably be my first choice!). It really needs to meet your requirements, so make that list of why you want an ebike.

Take your list to a local bike shop and ask an ebike expert for advice. Go online and watch videos from the experts at https://www.embn.com/, as they know what they are talking about. You can also send them questions. There are also a few online forums where you can ask questions and gain information on the different types.

DON’T be lured into buying an ebike which is out of your budget. You will end up with a very expensive ride around. Do your sums before you buy an ebike, as you will have to commit to using it regularly to make it pay for itself.

Buying an ebike – Where to start

Watch this video as a starting point before you consider buying an ebike. – Costs will be a bit out now as this was produced in 2020, but the content is still very relevant.

Top Tip – There is an excellent line in this video which says whether your ebike is €2000 or €10000, you will get the same level of assistance. The price difference is about the materials being used on the frame. Keep that in mind as to why you want an ebike in the first place.

This was my list.

  • Budget – I was very clear from the start what my top spend would be, and I stuck to it.
  • I use an ebike for tours and days out, so I wanted a Trekking bike. They are fitted with racks so I can put my panniers on the back.
  • As I do some mountain path riding – I wanted something robust.
  • I wanted a Bosch motor and a 625w battery.
  • I wanted it to be a “berry” colour as it’s part of my branding! Don’t be shy about wanting a specific colour – if you are riding it all the time, you have to love the colour too.
  • I wanted Shimano components on my bike as they are readily available in Europe for things like brake pads.
  • Where would I fit a water bottle holder? I wanted it on the down tube. My 2nd bike it would only fit on the handlebars due to the battery.

Result – I bought a Scott Axis eRide 20 Lady. (Trekker ebike)

Try before you buy

Find a bike shop specialising in ebikes. They will have ebike mechanics as well as salespeople. They will have a range of ebike types and offer test rides. Try different ebikes before you buy. There are so many different types of ebike that you need to try them before committing to one. Many bike shops will have open days in Spring to test ebikes. Otherwise, you can ask your local bike shop if they have ebikes to try. Don’t be lured by a cheap price or a great salesperson. Any good bike shop will never pressurise you to buy a specific ebike without trying out different models and asking plenty of questions. If they try to pressure you, get out of the shop and go and find someone who will listen to your list of wants and needs.

Be Informed

On the other hand, don’t walk into a bike shop without prior knowledge of ebikes and what they can do. There is so much info on the internet about ebikes. Take some time to read up on the different types of ebike and what they are used for. Buying a City ebike for riding Downhill courses will not end well for you or your ebike, so understand the basics of what everything means and does.

This is a big decision and one you need to make on your own. Take your list of what you want and need from an ebike and ensure it fits your criteria and budget. There is no point in buying an ebike and spending a lot more than your budget. You will remember that every time you get on your ebike.

Take your time to get the right ebike for you. It will be worth it.
