Getting ready for an ebike tour

Getting ready – where do you start?

Getting ready for anything in life normally makes the experience smoother, and cycling is no different. There is nothing worse when you are heading off down the road on your ebike, smiling or singing, in my case. You only realise you have forgotten something when you reach your first stop. It can spoil your tour if you have forgotten something that is essential. So let’s take a look at what you need.

Getting ready – cycling shorts

This would be my number 1 on the list every time. Cycling shorts for your comfort is a key area to think about. The type of shorts you wear will make a huge difference, and when you find the right ones, you will know the difference. Before you set off, test them on a short day because realising your shorts are uncomfortable on tour could be painful.  There are male/female specific and many different types and thicknesses of ‘insert’ (that’s the spongy bit that protects your bottom). Make sure you have enough pairs of shorts so that you can have a fresh pair each day, either by having a couple of pairs or knowing that you are able to wash them at night.

Getting ready – cycling tops

Cycling tops should be breathable and comfortable. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on a specific cycling top, a running or hiking top is just as effective. As long as it draws perspiration from your body and dries quickly, that is the most important. Personally, I would avoid the stuffed sausage look. You know, when people buy a cycling jersey that is skin tight and then shows their lumps and bumps. If you are uncomfortable, you won’t get to enjoy an amazing experience on your ebike.

Getting ready – waterproofs

Have an idea of the type of weather in the region where you are travelling so you can make a decision on clothing. Items such as waterproof clothing should be light and breathable. Even if you don’t think you need a waterproof, it’s better to have it with you. If your rain jacket is not breathable, you could get just as damp under the jacket, defeating the purpose of having one. A rain cape may be an extravagance if you are touring in hotter climates. However, if you are cycling in the mountains, then it could make or break your tour.

Getting ready – now what else?

  • Helmet – if you pick up a rental bike for your tour, I suggest taking your own helmet. It fits your head, and it’s like a comfort blanket.
  • Cycling gloves – it is surprising how chafed hands can get. Many of them are padded, so they absorb some of the vibrations of the track and stop the numb hand issue as well.
  • Sun cream – is essential and should never be forgotten. Being out in the open air and feeling the cool wind on your face does mean it is easy to get burnt. Apply sun cream often during the day, especially if you are sweating.
  • “Sudocrem” or another nappy cream – for protecting the parts that come into contact with the saddle. If that area is sore, then cycling will no longer be fun, so please look after your bum.
  • Water bottle – whatever the weather, do not get dehydrated. Don’t be fooled if the sun isn’t out and you are not sweating hard. Sip often and look to drink at least 2 litres each day.
  • Sunglasses – will protect your eyes from the strong sun but also from dust off the road and track.

Getting ready – directions

Whether you use an app, map, bike path book, or travel with a tour operator, they provide directions, make sure you have them with you. If you take a wrong turn, a 60km day could turn into an 80km day, I speak from experience. Always check that you are on the right track and know where you are. I always think part of the fun of a bike tour is looking at a map. I have been fascinated with maps since I was a child and dreamed of travelling the world. However you navigate, just remember to have it with you.

Getting ready – packing

When packing, think carefully about what you will need when you are not on your bike. Leave your tiara and ballgown at home. Just take comfy clothing that is light and cool and a warmer jacket or jumper to wear in the evening. If you carry all your gear, you will think very carefully when packing as it is extra weight. Pay attention to your cycling gear, as it will be your most important choice. I have a packing list; if you ever need one, just drop me a line, and I can send you mine.
