Südburgenland – Austria

Südburgenland

Südburgenland (South Burgenland) province lives up to its name, with numerous castles throughout. It is a long, narrow province which mainly borders Hungary to the east. The least populated province in Austria and possibly the least well-known. However, Burgenland boasts to be Austria’s ‘sunny side’ with 300 days of sunshine each year. I spent a few enjoyable days exploring Südburgenland on my Smile Tour of Austria, and in conclusion, I am glad I did, as I believe I discovered a hidden treasure.

The Province of Südburgenland

Südburgenland has huge swathes of open farmland, Vineyards, Kellerstöckl, Buschenschank and Uhudler wine. I think many people come here to escape their busy lives, as it doesn’t feel touristy; therefore, it’s a quieter place. There is a laid-back and take-it-easy feel to this area. Maybe it’s the sunshine or the warmth or the wind? I was surprised at how windy it was during my tour through Burgenland. I wasn’t expecting it; however, I’m not complaining, as it is very welcome during the incredibly warm days. Perhaps the vast areas of flat or slightly lumpy land mean there is less shelter? Above all, this cycling area offers interesting scenery, enjoyable roads, and quiet, well-maintained paths.

Kellerstöckl

Throughout this area, you will encounter sharp uphills that offer stunning views. In some places, the views are right across the border into Hungary. In this area, you will pass lots of these tiny wee houses. Which, in my mind, are for little mythical people. These are called Kellerstöckl, and in the past, each family had their own vineyard to make wine for private consumption. The farmers would press their grapes upstairs and then store the finished product in the cool cellar. Nowadays, some of these houses have been extended and enlarged to accommodate family homes. The rest are rental properties for those who want to escape the city and reconnect with nature. In short, these houses are not often used for their original purpose, but they look great and have a slightly mystical feel.

Südburgenland is littered with vineyards, and I noticed that roses were planted at the end of the row. So, being very nosy, I had to ask the farmer, and he told me that diseases, as well as unwanted insects and bugs, are attracted to the roses. This serves as an early warning system, allowing the farmer to take action and prevent the spread of disease or insect infestation. To me, they add colour and scent to a vineyard.

Burgenland – Uhudler Wine

My first taste of Uhudler was at a Buschenschank. This unique wine is produced exclusively in Burgenland and is made from a tough grape variety imported from America. As a result, no chemicals are needed to prevent bugs and diseases that would destroy the vine. It is a great way to start a conversation by asking the locals about the wine. They were very proud to tell me about this red/pink fruity wine, which is beloved in this area. Its colour attracts you to it, and a nice glass at lunchtime is a must.

Buschenschank

Buschenschank – is where a farmer can open his farm to you and sell what he grows or produces on the farm. This can include a variety of wines, cordials, cheeses, meats, cakes, butter, and bread. Just imagine, for example, a cold platter of meats and cheese washed down with excellent red, white or rosé wine for a great lunch stop on an ebike tour. After all that delicious food, it can be a little difficult to get going again. In order to know if the Buschenschank is open, a bunch of twigs are tied to their farm sign. This is because, originally, Buschenschank were built from twigs and branches, where the farmer could sell his wares.

Top Tip – Don’t miss the chance to visit a Buschenschank.

What I liked about this area:

  • Vast open spaces and sharp hills, above all, provide incredible views.
  • Kellerstöckl are certainly a sight to see with an interesting history.
  • Burgenlanders take pride in Uhudler wine; moreover, they are happy to discuss its merits.
  • Irrelevant of your experience, there is great cycling for every level.
  • Quieter roads and bike paths with good surfaces, so you feel safe.
