River Drau Bike Path
One of my favourite routes is the River Drau Bike Path. So much so that I have completed it three times. The reason I enjoy it so much is that it has a variety of scenery. From the mountains, farmland and rivers to the many lakes in Carinthia. The bike path is relatively flat, so you can enjoy this tour on an e-bike, regardless of your fitness level.
The tour starts in Toblach in the Italian Dolomites of South Tirol in Italy into the Austrian province of East Tirol. And finishes in Varaždin which is on the Slovenian / Croatian border, a total of 510 km long if you wanted to complete the whole route. I have ridden from Lienz through to Maribor in Slovenia. However, one day I would like to complete the whole length from start to finish. Whichever section you choose to do, you will not be disappointed.
Highlights of this tour for me are :
- The lakes in Carinthia are always special if you love being next to the water.
- The path is relatively flat, which means that everyone can give it a go.
- Central tourist spots are popular for a reason and are always lovely to visit.
- Scenery away from the ‘tourist’ hot spots is incredible, especially with the mountains as your backdrop.
- Drau bike path is well signposted and is easy to follow. Which means you are not constantly looking at a map.
