Buchensteinwand, Pillerseetal, Austria

Buchensteinwand

The Pillerseetal is my home and is just too beautiful not to share with the world. The Buchensteinwand is our local ski area in winter and a walkers and cyclist paradise in summer. This mountain provides you with an excellent 360º view from the top. You can see in all directions with no other mountains blocking your view. I think it’s very special, but you will need to see if for yourself.

Therefore if you want to get up into the mountains, have amazing views and feel like you are on top of the world, then the Buchensteinwand tour is for you. It is only 6 km from the bottom of the path to the top. However, that does not mean it is easy; the gradient ranges from 10% to 20%. That 6 km on a hot day can feel more like 26km. The path is gravel and, therefore, can be quite slippy. The path is also the access road for the people working at the top of the mountain. Occasionally, you will sometimes see cars on it. The majority of the time, the path is just for cyclists, walkers and, of course, the cows.

It is a challenging route, but it is also worth it. Once you get to the top, spend some time taking in what is around you, visit the St Jakobs Cross and a cold beer from the restaurant. This area is part of the St. Jakobs Pilgrim path that stretches across Europe, and the Cross at the top was built as part of this path, drawing thousands of visitors every year.
